In the beginning there was nothing. Neither the loneliness of absence nor the fullness of existence was known. To show the meaning of abundance, three trees were planted: the vine, the fig, and the olive.
These three trees brought abundance into the world. The olive tree was offered kingship so that its richness could be honored. In the ancient text it responds, “Shall I give up my oil, which God and people praise in me, to go and sway over the trees?” (Book of Judges 9:8–14). The olive, which refused power without hesitation and instead chose to heal poverty and illness with its fruit and its oil, has been regarded as sacred ever since.
These three ancient trees still grow side by side in the same regions today. The vine ripens its fruit alongside the olive, and the olive and fig trees reach their seasons together. The fig offers quiet protection to the olive tree. Its sweet fruit draws the olive fly, an insect that can cause serious harm to olive groves. When the olive fly begins to threaten the trees, the ripe figs release honey that lures the insects away. The flies choose the fig’s sweetness over the olive fruit, allowing the olive tree to continue its growth unharmed.
Thus, life continues in the lands whose plains are covered with honey and whose mountains are covered with oil.
The fruit of those seeking immortality is olive, and the elixir is olive oil. Olive oil is rich in unsaturated acids, which distinguishes it from other oils. In fact, because it is obtained by squeezing the fleshy fruit of the olive along with its seeds, it is actually a “ fruit juice”, unlike the edible oils obtained from seeds. It contains antioxidants and vitamin E. It has been proven by many studies that it positively affects cardiovascular health. It has been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. It heals wounds, is a natural moisturizer, nourishes skin and hair and gives them shine, relieves pain, especially from earache, and is mild laxative that relieves intestinal problems.
Even though human beings cannot achieve immortality, they have found one of the secrets of a ling life in olive oil. They accepted olive oil as a divine miraculous elixir and attributed divinity to it. According to legend, Prometheus not only stole fire from Zeus, but also took olive oil with him as a gift for the people.
